Part 1 Summary:
Trash is a book written by Andy Mulligan It is a story about
3 boys named Raphael, Rat and Gardo, the story is set in a dumpsite. The story
begins when Raphael finds a bag, while he’s working at the dumpsite inside the
bag is a wallet a key and a map, all the families, trash workers and children gathered
around because policemen came and looked for a bag, they offered money to the
person that finds it first, Raphael’s aunty spoke up that Raphael had found
something, they boys hid the bag and decided to make a plan to go to the train
station to find what they key was for, they were al scared that the policemen
were looking for them. Everywhere the boys looked there was mean looking guards
that were staring at them The boys found a letter and a code inside the locker
but what did the code really mean and why was it not in letters. Why was
Gabriel Olondriz in jail, what did he do to get himself there?
One of the themes in Trash is Police Corruption and
violence. An example of this is when
Raphael says “when the police get mean, you don’t want to be around”(page
29). This means that the police can be
violent if they become angry.
The second theme of the book is the dangers of poverty. An example of this is when ……. said “We
jumped early because you don’t ever want to be seen getting off the train. If guards or even porters see you, you can
get a real thrashing” (page 39). By this
he means that the boys are in danger of being beaten up by the guards if they
are caught as people who work on the dumpsite are not welcome on the trains.
