Summary Part 1

Part 1 Summary:

Trash is a book written by Andy Mulligan It is a story about 3 boys named Raphael, Rat and Gardo, the story is set in a dumpsite. The story begins when Raphael finds a bag, while he’s working at the dumpsite inside the bag is a wallet a key and a map, all the families, trash workers and children gathered around because policemen came and looked for a bag, they offered money to the person that finds it first, Raphael’s aunty spoke up that Raphael had found something, they boys hid the bag and decided to make a plan to go to the train station to find what they key was for, they were al scared that the policemen were looking for them. Everywhere the boys looked there was mean looking guards that were staring at them The boys found a letter and a code inside the locker but what did the code really mean and why was it not in letters. Why was Gabriel Olondriz in jail, what did he do to get himself there?

One of the themes in Trash is Police Corruption and violence.  An example of this is when Raphael says “when the police get mean, you don’t want to be around”(page 29).  This means that the police can be violent if they become angry.

The second theme of the book is the dangers of poverty.  An example of this is when ……. said “We jumped early because you don’t ever want to be seen getting off the train.  If guards or even porters see you, you can get a real thrashing” (page 39).  By this he means that the boys are in danger of being beaten up by the guards if they are caught as people who work on the dumpsite are not welcome on the trains.

Family

Blog post title: Family: Using the phrase, “In this story, family means…” Discuss the issue of family in Trash. Explain your choices. The issue of the family in trash that the boys doesn't have a complete family, well some of them dont. Raphael had only his aunty while Gardo and Rat had no-one accept for each other, but i think Gardo lived with Raphael or had some of his cousins or his friends with him. In this book Trash by Andy Mulligan, no one was alone they all had each other. I think Raphael, Gardo and Rat was a family already because they never split up, unless they had a plan for getting away from the police when Raphael stole that bag. In their friendship their will always be one person who would be either smart, and they would always share things like what families do, even if they do not have lots of things, for example food, they mostly have a little amount of food and also money, accept the thing that Rat likes to steal from Father Juilliard, but he is also honest about it and always write in a piece of paper that Rat was there.

Characters

1.     Blog post title: Characters: Discuss the character traits that allow Raphael, Gardo, and Rat to ultimately persevere. How are these characters similar to each other? In what ways are they different? Which character are you most like?

The main characters in this story is Raphael, Gardo and Jun Jun (aka Rat)

The boys are similar to each other
  • They are poor
  • Good little liars
  • Smart
  • Intelligent
  • Kind
  • Good at solving mysteries
But their differences are
  • That there will always be one person who is brave
  • Raphael and Gardo thinks Rat likes to show off
  • The all have different points of view in some parts of the story
  • Rat had the talent to steal money while gardo and raphael was sort of afraid (Raphael and Gardo were not really brave in some parts)
  • In every chapter there will always be one person who is smart to figure out the mystery

Climax

1.     Blog post title: Climax: In the last section of the book, the boys tell the story together, why does the author make this happen?  What does this do to the story?  (pace, excitement etc.)

In the last part of the book,  the boys tell the story together maybe its because they want to tell the reader what they all think, so they all agree what they are saying, that means each person doesn't have a different opinion. The author made it happen so people will be more interested as what they are all going to say to the story they just told and it will make the reader to just only read the lats chapter, because what i think the reader doesn't want to know all the boys opinion and stories about the story so the author just put it all in one paragraph to make it all easier and less confusing for the reader.

Is it ok to lie?

Is it ok to lie?

In the whole book the person that lies the most was Raphael, Gardo and Rat (also known as Jun-Jun). They lied a lot because they were smart kids, they think first before they do something so they don’t get in trouble. In few of the other chapters it was not only those dumpsite boys who were always lying, but there was Father Juilliard and Sister Olivia who lied in some parts of the book

First of all Rat lied to Father Juilliard saying that Raphael and Gardo needs to use the computer for studying, because there was an upcoming test, and said that they will be paying for their computer time, but actually what they were doing is researching but it was not for the quiz, it was about Pascal Aguila (page 51). Sister Olivia lied about how she tried to protect the boys as best as she could, so they wont be taken again, but really she couldn’t protect them.

Where does Poverty Come From?

Where does poverty come from?

Why are people poor?

Not everyone in the world is fortunate to be born into the world with housing and money and lots of foods to eat. People can be poor because they can loose or waste their money or they were just born into a poor family, but poor people are not different to the rich, we are all the same, we are all human.

The poorest country is Congo

If Congo was my home instead of Indonesia i would

+ Have 2.7 times higher chance of dying in infancy
+ Consume 97.59% less oil
+ Make 92.5% less money
+ Die 16.32 years sooner
+ Use 82.78& less electricity
+ Spend 78.83% less money on health care

Ways to fight poverty

1. Educate Yourself
2. Take Legislative Action
3. Donate
4. Volunteer
5. Join a Campaign
6. Organise a Rally
7. Hold a Benefit Concert
8. Host a 5K run
9. Write or Start a petition
10. Write an Article
11. Put Up Posters on Campus
12. Donate Leftovers

The Economic Hitmen

Why Are People Poor

The cause of people being in poverty is because the government makes deals with the countries by saying that they will give money to the country, when in reality the country has to give money that they don't have to the government. The country is then left in debt with army camps being set up to 'protect' them. After a while they will try and kick the government out of the country which results in two countries in war which causes terrorism and money being spent on air force and weaponry.
